Spinder gets the point of this thought exercise but if they're going to ask such a contrived question, he's going to give a contrived answer. Which means he would learn a lot about trolleys and how easy it is to derail them (I am far from an expert but I think it would depend on the landscape. I suspect a trolley with a cable grip, like in San Francisco, is harder to derail if the cable grip is active, but idk). He's got a whole plan for derailing, or otherwise mechanically disrupting the trolley (if it stops pulling power does it stop moving? how fast can he get on the roof?). Aside from his absolute pettiness he also can't help but imagine the fallout from having vehicularly manslaughtered one or more people and he doesn't think he could deal with that.

Christina "now you're thinking with warpals" Larousse would just warp the trolley. Ideally this would happen after she already was not in the trolley, but if she has to die with it, so be it. In general, if sacrificing herself would save everyone else, she'd probably do it. But if there are other people in the trolley, as in some versions of the problem, because she's not going to sacrifice them to warp. Hypothetically she could just warp away the split in the track, thereby derailing the trolley and saving everyone. But that's a much smaller target than a trolley and harder to hit when she's moving. If she had to actually abide by the rules of the exercise she would kill the one person. Unless that one person was her father. Then she'd be so paralyzed about it that she'd do nothing and the five people would die. Which is still a lot less people than she indirectly enabled Althea to kill, but that's cold comfort.

Althea would let the five be killed without hesitation if there was a single person among them that had ever pissed her off. She doesn't really care either way, but it would feel better to get a little revenge. However, she would also switch away from a track Christina is tied to, an absolutely frigid comfort for Christina.

Vic, among others, has pointed out that if you do nothing, you're not responsible for what happens. Which is a tenuous position, but he would like it to be true. But he'd also rather kill one person than five, so make of that what you will.

Celia and Allison are still wondering what kind of Gotham-ass trolley line this is, like, first of all, how did these people get tied to the tracks? Is this some kind of a trick? Are the five people all robots and the one person a human? There's just not enough information here.

Dez would be extremely dismayed by the idea that the five people could be robots. But if they were, they have backups, right? Right? Syndy is already holding him back from steering away from the five probably-robots, because she considers herself an expert on how humans die, actually, so they can't run over the human. If the robots turn out to be humans, they are both scarred for life and also the first androids to go to jail, probably. They develop a weird game of chicken where they keep saying they're going to delete the memories but come up with reasons not to. Doing this only deals them more psychic damage.

"You just gotta kill the one person," Avis says, with total conviction and complete boredom. "That's how these puzzles work. You gotta do a shitty thing, so you have to do the least shitty version of the thing." It's a toss up if she'd automatically run over the five if she was considering whether or not to run over Sid as the one person, though.

Been thinking about TFA lately so:

Anni and Dez stand out for the same reason: they're both blue. With Dez you might actually notice the purple hair or cartoon face first, but the blue part is kind of important. And Anni just wears blue 90% of the time.

Because Syndy took inspiration from Urma's hair, they also both incidentally are most noticeable because of their artificially grey hair.

Hoven is obvious because he's a sha-nawwen. They're not that common just out in the world. However the thing that draws your attention might actually be just how many books he is carrying.

With Julian, it depends on the season. In winter it's his green fedora with earflaps that go all the way around the back, and in summer, his ear piercings are a lot more visible. But in general he's a bit more nondescript.

Zel always seems to be wearing at least one bright thing, such as the blue and green beanie Anni gave her or a neon purple band shirt, or else has a self-cropped shirt that is missing half its context, e.g. a "horse girl" kind of shirt cropped so that only the horse picture and "horse" are still visible.

Cooperative world editor, city-builder & social life toybox (FreeCiv+SC4?+TS2?)

Heavily work in progress (WIP) project as to have some casual social & edutaining fun online again in the styles of both old and new technical innovations, encouraging curiosity and interactive creativity version per version. I wish to develop and play JIT hot-editable environments around NPR & my Neue Geo-Syndie retro toon assets in copyleft ways and this is my way of doing it. It would be for a social cute toon tinkering space for learning skills, sharing knowledge and socializing... as well as building personalized developer stacks & environment. Being designed for extruding a layered 2D sector map into a 3D multi-user playground inspired by the works of Ken Silverman, Qodot and Valve's Source engine. The first, current protoype, made within Mosi is a extremely simple demo for me to start the development process and gotta rework it cyclic-ally towards the transparent & direct access 3D interactive visualization toy it deserves to be.

I do try aiming for 12x12 px primitives as to MVP my way towards the 48x48 or 60x60 6bpc pixmap tileset but honestly I will go with whatever fits my stylized lofi tastes?

Making MegaOCEAN NPC factional designs / demos (in Unity using the PixelCrushers' packages I own and some custom C#+F# additional code) should go first, alongside its dedicated character profile generator / dress-up customizer. But I often get distracted with the grand scale of my world first and foremost because of how I design my constructed world to fit some manifestation needs (prioritizing cozy top-down approach more first, figuring out some individual human-scale things as I get closer to the average / median life biography of somebody on such a planet...)

But do be aware I am making steady progress on Azgaar and quite soon I should be good to export it towards GPlates / GProjector, leading me towards my QGIS referee's gig to teach me some purpose-specific additions to put into the upcoming model. (Mostly taking full advantage of the software for history animations, layered 2D + 3D game scenes & immersive OpenStreetMap geofiction atlas-es)

Also inspired by Lambda Calculus / Pāṇinian Grammar / Turing Completeness as well as the IPL (information processing language) and its Lisp programming family of successor languages as far as making it very easy to transparently modify as a symbolic computation deque with a data bank (read as database), a frontend (read as either web site or desktop/mobile client) & REPL knowledge-system (scripting language) to really up the game for this world-ly simulator stack. But that might be a tad byte (pun intended) overkill even long term-wise.

Hopefully my WIP 12-bit data processor design is fine enough to efficiently handle the software toy program within its ~256KW (KiloWord) RAM & 48MW storage space, aka running the 3D multi-user domain simulation beyond 60FPS.

Dez: He wants you to know he didn't do it. However if you track the chain of events from what he did do, it's pretty clear that if he had done something differently the potion shop would not ultimately be on fire.

Syndy: She set YOUR potion shop on fire, and honestly, if it's that flammable, can you really call yourself a magic merchant?

Mizzat: Vi was trying to get the hang of this "auras" thing (isn't everyone's aura blue? no? okay) and pissed off the wrong customer in the process. That's why the shop's on fire now. Vi fully takes the blame for this but Syndy is suggesting that if someone else's molotov cocktail set the building on fire then maybe vi isn't that responsible.

Imjen: Zi was actually making potions, though perhaps at a higher complexity than appropriate, and got distracted by the in-world version of a TikTok. And so now everything is on fire but zi got out in a hurry to avoid getting hurt and - oh shit. Zir new sofa...

Ah, where to start?Hi, I am Autumn.  I am the founder of Syndi.   It was rather popular for its extensive collection of attributes; which encouraged me to carry it farther.Automobile was first commissioned in PHP beneath the GNU General Public License v2 and published as v2.0, though interest in it rapidly declined since the PHP language only failed to do justice.  Nonetheless, it had been the very first open source launch.A team termed Xelhua was shaped who took upon themselves the job of rewriting Automobile from the Perl programming language and discharging it as v3.0 in early 2011.  This launch was considerable and developed fame on the Freenode IRC system, amongst others.  In the summer of that exact same calendar year, Xelhua dissolved and a brand new team, Arinity, headed by Matthew Barksdale, took over the job and made a few improvements I'd believe very tasteful.Maybe unfortunately, Automobile v3.0 too diminished.  Matthew revived leadership to me personally and that I pioneered a rewrite from the Ruby and C programming languages at December 2012, I initially intended to become v4.0 of Automobile.But, that didn't quite last.  I chose"Automobile" to be too generic, also unoriginal a title, and understanding that I'd conjured it at twenty years old, I finally decided on disposing of the name and naming the reboot, Syndi.Matthew Carey joined me in this reboot, also has become an indispensable staff member.  It is a massive undertaking, but we are making progress!Syndi is much more tasteful than her disposition, and we want her to become remarkably sophisticated yet modular.  She uses the amazing features provided by the most recent execution of Ruby, v2.0.  You may care too to combine with the official IRC channel, which will be #syndi on Freenode.Syndi has been originally codenamed"Phoenix," since she's regenerated in the ash of Vehicle to a far superior program.  (:

Elraen Mahariel and Esther Trevelyan could both be pretty cuddly. Adhlea Lavellan is suspicious and prickly at first. . . but once she knows you she will cuddle and mother you to death, and Mirabel Hawke has shades of that as well but is less outright cuddly than Adhlea.

YEAH ANDROIDS

The most general thing to know about android education is that they all went through some form of having their brains pickled in encyclopedias prior to being assembled into full working systems. This process was most refined with Dez, since he's the youngest and has benefited from all of the developments of the earlier androids, and least comprehensive with Mizzat, because the university team that built vim was like, "vi mostly just needs to know about math, sooooo…"

Mizzat is the only one who has had a truly Formal education. Since vi was built to be a math professor vi had an honorary degree from the University of the Second Akkanswl when vi started out, but vi went on to not only get an actual doctorate in math - I'm gonna tentatively say with a focus on discrete geometry but that just seemed like the best choice from ten minutes of trying to understand what Cornell's math PhD concentrations are - which vi did so the degree part wouldn't seem like such a lie but also because there's way more to math than just the calculus vi was pickled in and teaches. Vi did have the benefit of having a very personable build team that was happy to teach vim stuff and also to accept their own mistakes in their approach. But vi has learned a lot just by being extremely curious, with unrestricted access to both the network and the university library. Vi has considered going for more degrees, because vi has a ridiculous amount of time on vis hands despite being a teacher (vi has literally all hours of the day to do things) and really needs to pick up another research project or five.

Imjen had a quasi-formal education via the medical school and hospital at the University of the Fifth Akkanswl, where zi was built. Zi was taught how to interact and later to do schedustrar and nurse work by various experts, but was essentially a privately tutored student. But there was a lot of stuff that zir supervisory team didn't bother to teach zim, probably because they just expected zim to pick it up like a normal swl child. Which zi kind of did, by taking all of zir opportunities to just sort of wander the city. They mostly didn't try to stop zim but they also didn't love it when zi started to have political opinions and such. Because Imjen looks extremely like a normal swl, it's easy for zim to dip in and out of normal swl areas and learn by watching other people. That has also fueled zir weird relationship with passing as nondroid. In recent years Imjen has started attending night classes about random non-computer-science things, which zir supervisors like. But it's partly just to befriend the professors so they'll teach zim more things. Zi feels oddly comfortable around professors, probably because zi has known a lot of them, but the comp sci ones always look at zim a little bit like a cut of meat.

Syndy was extra extra pickled in her prebuild stages because Gweltsen knew that they weren't going to have the opportunity to teach her much - because of their terminal illness, but also because of hiding her sapience from everyone else. But they did walk her through the legal questions surrounding her and teach her a random assortment of things from their own experience. Hoven was around for a small fraction of the time she was with Gweltsen, too. She also learned more than she cares to admit from her memories of her unconscious time as a postal robot ("Sintii-bot"). There's a lot of data in there about the ways people interact. Plus there was a fair amount of time at night where she was conscious but unsupervised and so could fuck with the computer system or peel open packages she wasn't supposed to look at or mess with the ceiling tiles. But everything else she's pretty much learned from romcoms and period dramas.

Dez was moderately pickled, closer to Syndy's level than the others'. He has never even looked upon a school (unless you count the one on Elbas Island), let alone been in one. He's technically been homeschooled, in a very laissez-faire fashion that has mostly been penmanship, art class, and a lot of tooling around in Anni's workshop that we could call shop class. A huge chunk of what he knows has been gleaned from watching documentaries, and also becoming obsessed with something (spies, astrogeology, snow) and reading up on it with an introductory textbook open next to the super high level article he wants to read Right Now. He hates reading physical books, though, so he's always reading them in his internal viewer. Anni is neither his teacher nor his mom but she's kinda played the role of both, as has Julian. Julian works from home and also manages the bills so he's done a lot of explaining about things. Peter could be considered a guest lecturer in art and dogs. Zel and Urma are more like the substitute teachers who come in and have you watch a movie in class, except Zel also gives him his vicarious video game fix, and he has seen a lot of interactions via moderating her stream chats.

In an earlier version of TFA, Mizzat is the first to encounter (still deactivated) Syndy when Hoven brings her to vis university. It was all very exciting and dramatic but in the end I decided it added too many extra names and steps on Hoven's journey - this was the big thing that made me decide that Anni and Gweltsen were already friends.

For context, "K" is the person Hoven came to talk to, the professor that led Mizzat's build team and was a friend of Gweltsen's. "H" is Hoven.

Dez: She really is okay, though, right? Just off? Mizzat: Yes. Vi hadn’t stopped typing when Imjen interrupted with, But what about K’s grant project? How is his team going to have time for Sintii? Mizzat: I’m getting to that let me type Imjen responded with a four by three emoji grid composed of weary face, mouthless face, and melting face, which he understood as yeah yeah, I’m shutting up, but how dare you call me out for literally melting with anticipation over here. Mizzat: While we were in the meeting, K sent an email to Anni to ask if he could pass her information on to H. Dez: !!!!!!!!!!!! He deliberated his next move for all of a quarter second before adding, should I message her she’s at work right now and going straight to his chat with her. She was online for some reason. Most likely she was just looking something up on her node and had chat open in the background, which half the time made it say she was online when she wasn’t really. Imjen: do it came the notification from the side of his display region while up from the bottom came a message from Anni. Dr. K just sent me an email about an android?

Hoven sat on the moss-edged bench, rubbing at the bridge of his snout like it would make the tears stop prickling at his eyes. When he turned back, Syndy wasn’t there. She was still forty feet away, standing stiffly over the half ledger stone he’d just been standing at. Her head was tilted to stare down at it, but nothing below her neck had shifted in turn. Her hands still clutched the label-ridden silver tin that held Gweltsen. Behind her, the clouds had fully gathered in preparation for an early-autumn storm, the breeze sending a handful of fallen leaves skittering across the sea of flat gravestones, ruffling the skirts of her deep blue dress around her knees. It felt like she would never move from that half-silhouetted spot, as though she too was part of the grave marker, but then she was stepping with haste down the row, her head still bowed, her face haloed by windblown locks of grey. When she reached him, she stood over him, casting him in vague shadow. Slowly, the angle of her neck eased, and she met his eyes with a look he could only describe as haunted. “I can’t do it.”

They were tall, and loud, and beautiful in their oddly cut suit, so it shouldn’t be this hard to find them—ah. They were sitting at the other end of the bar, with an empty seat on either side of them, like an open invitation. He tried not to think about what it would mean if it wasn’t an invitation as he moved over to one of those seats. They glanced up as he put a hand on a seat beside them. “This seat taken?” he asked. “It is now,” they said with a smile that definitely was inviting. He set his drink on the bar and took his place. “I’m Fabian. He-him.” “Oh, so you’re Fabian. I’ve been wondering.” “Have you heard about me?” If they heard it from Isabel who knew what had been said. “Oh, sure,” they said with a grin. “Good things, though. Very good things.” “Really? Well, if a gentleman such as yourself would like to do more than hear, I think I could arrange that. What’s your name?” They waved a hand as though they were trying to erase something. “Look at me, being rude. I’m Tatiana, she-her or whatever you feel like.” Shit. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed.” “I didn’t say you assumed wrong,” they said, running their tongue along their back teeth in a way that was probably not meant to be seductive but worked on him anyway. “I’ll be anyone’s gentleman for a good arrangement.”

She always leaves me with the umbrella, says I need it more, because if I get wet then I’ll get cold. Law of evaporation. Unfortunately she’s right, but she never stays under the umbrella either. She’s always two stalls ahead of me in the market while I’m a one-swl procession, making my way down the middle with all the shopping bags on my arms. I guess I should be flattered in a nebulous kind of way. She’s rarely excited enough to go flitting around like this, but then she’s never been to an open market in fourth. Never been home with me in this home that isn’t home. And to watch her, it’s…I wonder if I have that same soft look on my face that my parents always have for each other. I wonder if she can tell.

Dez: just watching it. Probably trying to identify it on the network. 0% concerned.

Syndy: ugh you have to smash these, they're bad news. [misses like five times and then manages to smash it into the engravings on her feet] Peeeteeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Peter: it's okay I'll have these cleaned up in a sec. Oh look, there's another one. Let me-- oh, never mind, Tulip [his dog] just ate it.

Zel: believes the cockroach is too fast to squish, therefore it is, no matter how carefully she approaches it with a shoe (it would be Zalen's shoe if he ever wore anything that wasn't heels. This delicate procedure requires surface area).

Anni: chasing it around furniture trying to capture it in a glass while running through all the possible reasons there could be a cockroach??? in her house???

Julian: sighs and manages to stomp it on the first try.

Hoven: stares at it and wills it not to come any closer before he can make Julian deal with it.

Urma: climbs on the table and calls Anni.

Nicea crew

Declan: immediately decides this is above his pay grade and goes to find someone else to deal with it.

Cady: cockroach trapper extraordinaire. The cockroach is now living its best life over in the woods and it better stay there.

Rodney: he should do something about this. And he will. Probably. When he's done watching it in horror and not moving an inch.

Isabel: tries to smash it, misses, enters rage mode. It will not escape her. She will be waiting (and reasoning out whether she has brought the cockroach with her snack habits or it's unrelated).

Spinder: concocting a plan to hit it on the first try with whatever is closest to him, but it vanishes while he's thinking about it.

Tristan: not at all worried about getting up close and personal with the cockroach but still having a bad time trying to catch it or even squish it.

Tatya: in true cowgirl fashion, herds it out the door.

Bo: is anyone looking? No? They grab it off the wall and stuff it into their mouth.

Happy STS! Have you ever had to cut an interesting part of a character's backstory/lore because it didn't make sense with the overall story that you were trying to tell?

Happy STS future! This is such an interesting question because usually the lore got majorly changed whenever I moved settings - not necessarily to the point of being unrecognizable, but over the last couple of decades the setting shifts have been pretty wild, especially in what is now locality space. And with the setting shifts, the story also changed, so it all kind of worked in tandem. As I've gotten older I've thought more about themes and motifs and such and been interested in overall story goals rather than just playing dolls with all my little guys, but setting is still a big part of that. All that said, here's a few major lore changes:

In pretty much every version leading up to the current canon, almost everyone on Pajiir was white by default. Which meant that Dez was white by default and built by white people. He was essentially an uncanny valley synthetic white guy, except I mostly ignored the uncanny valley part. But as I started developing the current canon, I realized that even aside from questions of technology, Dez looking like A Human at all added a lot of layers I wasn't interested in exploring and didn't really make sense with how he related to his human builders (a big part of his character before was how he would just blend in with everyone else). So the circumstances of his build evolved with his design, and he kind of paved the way for building out the biotech in the setting. By the same token, Syndy's old version looked human in the same way that Ratchet from Robots looks human (like, more than Dez but still not Human TM) but with all of the lore about the Navaren monarchy's intentions for her, it made sense to make her look Human TM and also like the archetypal Attractive Navaren Woman.

In old versions of locality space there was a MAJOR thread of queerphobia that WAS actually baked into the lore and the way the story unfolded (mostly in terms of the now-crew of the Nicea). But especially as I figured out how queer I was, I realized that wasn't the story I wanted to tell, and that weird worldbuilding aside I was also treading into experiences that were very much not my own (e.g. Catholic queerphobia) that I didn't need to get at the heart of my story. But it did survive a couple big setting shifts, and extremely informed the shape of Isabel's backstory (it still does, just without the queer = inherently bad part) and how Declan was allowed or not allowed to grieve Cady.

On a funnier note, Christina has always been a powerful witch, but there was also a time in past canons where she was highly theatrical about all of her spells, which kinda seemed to be a function of her wanting to impress people and make friends despite having -1 charisma otherwise. But I found that her conflict with Althea inside the witch council was more interesting, and I dropped the theatrics in favor of her being more like an expert who has forgotten how to talk to non-experts. And also not being alone because of negative charisma but for other people's safety, which is so much more compelling.

Also original Sid was ?dead? and ?trapped? in the space-timestream? so he could go anywhere in the 15 dimensions and be at any time (I think) but had his own rules of engagement to not mess things up, which meant that at some point he stole Horatio from the past to act as a midwife for an endangered magical creature? and ran around delivering cryptic messages and one-liners to various characters who were being arrested for actions related to said magical creature? and was generally just incredible and great but also probably was the thing that made me realize that all the dimension and creature stuff was just plot fluff because I wasn't focusing on the character level of the story, even though that was obviously what I wanted to write. This did not cause me to actually write anything better for some time, because you really can't top an overly dramatic ghost man.

Ngl I'm curious about how the TFA androids organize their chats too, like how does that technology work in this setting?

Honestly I always imagined it being like Telegram (just because that's what I use the most lol) but they have a folder for all of their chats - I guess kind of like groups in Telegram but the chat system isn't specifically based on Telegram. They have the primary general chat where they talk the most, but they also make chats for specific projects, such as S Chat, which was for their efforts toward locating Syndy. Their organizational structure is pretty much based on whether they want to keep all the resources for one topic in one chat. Which is interesting now that I think about it because I don't think any of them have a strict folder hierarchy in their internal storage in general. Dez might for his movies, but they all use a similar linked data sort of structure for most information.

They do differ in whether they have a superfolder that contains their 2-3 android chats plus the all-android chats. Mizzat does because vi wants to keep android stuff separate from vis academic stuff (I've kind of been imagining that there's one message app that everyone uses, technologically like texting but feature rich like other messaging apps. I suspect it's an open source base that gets built on so it's not 100% identical across nodes). Imjen also does, but because zi wants everything to be very organized and also because zi's paranoid and wants to enforce separation between University/job shit and zis fun real life. Dez likes his quasi-flat hierarchy of all his individual friend chats just hanging around, but he specifically has reordering based on who most recently messaged turned off so he can go DMs > group DMs > full on folders/groups. I think Syndy doesn't bother to group her chats but since her interface is all command line I wonder if that changes how she handles other things.

Many thanks for the ask, Sam! I give Syndy a hug and she's like "yeah sure whatever if it makes you feel better" but 2.3 seconds later when she realizes I left a sticky note on her back I'm already gone.

All the note says is, "It was about them, not you." That is, the way Gweltsen handled their own death. She'll figure out what it means eventually.
